Nothing is ever enough.

Fast or slow the nerves keep digging
Up and down the hills start biting.
Surprised I don’t have white hair growing
With all the thinking I should be aging.

What happened to that faraway future,
Brightly shining as a beacon of hope?
It arrived and then the past looked better,
And in our beds we start to mope.

At first we thought of ourselves as smart,
Heck! Maybe even smarter than everyone else!
Now back at the bottom trying to start,
It seems again we’ve lost our stealth.

Who knew there could be too many roads,
If only previews were provided as well,
Who knew we needed our choices narrowed
Perhaps then we’d have a chance to win the Nobel.

Now dating, that’s a funny conception,
Find me a human and I might give a damn,
Right now I only see animals in action,
Anything else and it might be a scam.

Some say dogs or diamonds are one’s best friends,
I say Ramen and the pizza man,
Or is it the cookies? I guess it depends,
Either way our stomachs have started to span.

Remember when mommy said, “make your bed?”
You wondered why since it’ll get messed up again,
Now you’re away and something smells like its dead,
Must be those crumbs or those mysterious stains.

Though your few crappy jobs are at minimum wage,
Somehow you scrape up enough credit to waste
To meet a celebrity all the way backstage,
Now is the time parents are even more embraced.

They call you a Freshman when you’re really much older
Your insides start boiling, you’re not treated fairly,
Compared to High school, you say you’re much smarter,
Maybe that’s true when you’re not high or tipsy.

And you wonder why insurance is so high,
When they find bottles of booze by your thigh,
It’s not mine! I swear! You cry,
While texting and applying mascara to eyes.

This is the time for personality to shine!
What better than a tattoo to show what’s inside.
Even better, my right hand will do just fine,
Let future interviewers experience my pride.

Then there are days when the mirror looks wrong,
You can’t be that ugly! You just can’t be!
When did those bags come along?
Pimples and acne, why do I look so chubby?

You’re obsessed with the bestseller Facebook,
You follow tweety-bird on Twitter,
Now there’s tumblr to attempt your own book,
And your sweetheart sent you virtual flowers.

All in all the 20s are wicked and twisted,
There’s not enough psychologists to go around,
Anxious, stubborn, we all think we’re jaded
When we find ourselves pushed into the background.

Tomorrow is too late for today’s affections,
at every corner Death stalks a soul
tragedy with a single snap,
but if you love that fated soul
let it be known:
the very least let Death take one who knew Love
may that single word mean enough to cast a light
Heaven is for warmed hearts
Say “I love you” tonight.

I
All this talk about equality
when nothing was equal from the start.

we attempt to strike a balance
and call it equality,
but in all respects it is only the pull and push
of puppets.

Among humans we share little
perhaps only life and death
and even then
some die young and others old
some horrid deaths and others “sweet”

II

I’ve never been more superior
than against my own demons

no matter the victories
the hoots and hollers
I stand before time like a deer
watching the light set fire
we were never stable creatures

but we know when to run.

III
We, academics
demand equality yet
scoff at the idea.

Look! Cultures clash
values clash
but hand in hand
by common humanity
we share the greatest love.

Look! how we bicker
with different paradigms
we have each other’s eyes
and crush them to the ground
but please
hush,
hand in hand
we have humanity:

Our common ground

Dearest,
I’ve dedicated much to you:
loyalty,
honesty,
and love above all,
but those are just words     aren’t they?
Babbles of a love-struck fool
who cannot speak
without stumbling
smile without laughter.

I tell you
you’re still a princess
full of luscious locks–
silver–
but as beautiful       as precious
as a spring bud,
as ripe       as sweet
as when we first spoke,

and I am as in love
with this well-worn face–
if not more–
than all youth combined.

Do you hear the wind outside?
It knows my heart–
the way it swings like a pendulum
side to side,
eventually breaks a branch
smothers the ground.

A child’s laugh is
beyond common explanation,
like a breath of air
that never comes back out,
the smell of banana bread
fresh from the warm oven on
days when mother knew
what the spirit needed.

Taintless rapture
of needless restraint
belched out notes,
of saintly love.
I feel faint when I hear
sound of birth so softly sung,
no other than a child’s laugh,
here it was and gone again,
I kiss the sweetened air goodbye.

I always took the highway
never a second thought to Love,
Time never considered confusion a reason,
the world never yields.

Don’t bother me with flying red capes,
I have no interest in vexing bulls,
already they charge as if tomorrow
they will die alone.

I press the seeds to sleep,
water, light, what else to give?
cause I will not give my kiss,
grow it may or cease.

Your way gives me arrhythmia,
Doctor’s orders are clear:
depart or I will perish,
one of us must go.

There is a line in my life,
with many points of interest,
foolish Love, to think you’re one of them
has me howling with glee.

Scoot! sit, good boy, now stay,
I’ll tell you a secret even birds don’t know,
the highway never lasted for long, when
every morning it was kissed by the sun.
