When potent flowers no longer seduce,
the cat has just one life,
Writer and the chopping block
head-to-head; defeat.
Magnified objects in frozen time
drops the jaw too slow,
words come a second too late,
awkward space ensue.

Crowds take talent to remain unseen,
mind and soul detached,
painter and his model–nude–
nothing else but paint,
one duty, one cause for attention,
emotions: distractions,
the trash lady and her uniform,
hand them to her.

Weight of the world is an understatement
add a century a dreams burnt,
Biblical stories of revival and rebirth,
remain grouped letters.
I rest my case deep in sleep
buried painfully,
that poor bird and its broken wing
doubtful hope in death.

We are not always told what to do–
or do what we are told to do–
For unlike other species, we fight ourselves
thus the power of mirrors
when wish to see beneath the skin.

Even so there are many among us,
live and die most tragically
when the end holds no meaning
from an empty, wasteful existence.

If you see a wall, remember this
it is an illusion, there are no walls,
break your knuckles if you must,
do not remain still,
that room will shrink into a blackness
until you find yourself swallowed by dirt.

Get out, get out, you must get out

If by the end an insatiable thirst drives the mind insane
What is left to pursue but dreams of youth, of times far behind.
They say we slumber in death but I say not; we wake in death–
Mirror of our souls.
With fists we pound against truths we have hidden,
this mirror is ours to keep,
For in the shadows of our deepest desires and fears
Death comes bearing ambitious gifts
knowing well we possess neither strength or hope to march another mile.
It is a taunt, the worse of sorts, to believe again in young feats
only to look down and be reminded of sagging skin.
And with the sound of heavy heaves the world grows dark,
and among the desperate sighs remain
a half-written play performed half-decently.

Have you ever, for a moment–a second–
looked away from the objects closest
forget the ground where your feet rests
shut out the voices in the air
and peered out the window into a void
where all you’ve ever known collapses;
One small void of existence,
where all you see is a shadowy figure of yourself
aged, kneeling beside a bouquet of flowers
kissing the presence of loved ones
wondering how was it that yesterday
you were sitting at a desk toiling endlessly
every breath forgettable
until the possibility of never breathing
turned and faced you head on.

Tomorrow is too late for today’s affections,
at every corner Death stalks a soul
tragedy with a single snap,
but if you love that fated soul
let it be known:
the very least let Death take one who knew Love
may that single word mean enough to cast a light
Heaven is for warmed hearts
Say “I love you” tonight.

We’ve been liberated too much

Freedom never meant divine power
Let god or gods keep that
We’ve always wanted more

By more I mean not ambition
ambition was water to seeds.

Our fathers planted life
we feed upon their fruits

Misshapen roots ignored,
forgotten roots die,
Pretty little fruits thrive
but for how long?

how long?

we drink the blood of the dead
blood always gave life.
but it’ll dry like the rivers
used up and left to waste

because we’re free
to kill the heart of liberty

I
All this talk about equality
when nothing was equal from the start.

we attempt to strike a balance
and call it equality,
but in all respects it is only the pull and push
of puppets.

Among humans we share little
perhaps only life and death
and even then
some die young and others old
some horrid deaths and others “sweet”

II

I’ve never been more superior
than against my own demons

no matter the victories
the hoots and hollers
I stand before time like a deer
watching the light set fire
we were never stable creatures

but we know when to run.

III
We, academics
demand equality yet
scoff at the idea.

Look! Cultures clash
values clash
but hand in hand
by common humanity
we share the greatest love.

Look! how we bicker
with different paradigms
we have each other’s eyes
and crush them to the ground
but please
hush,
hand in hand
we have humanity:

Our common ground
